Should Cabaye Face Retrospective Action for His Tackle on Spearing?

Should Cabaye Face Retrospective Action for His Tackle on Spearing?

Posted on 02. Jan, 2012 by in Debate, Media

Following Jay Spearing’s return from suspension after picking up a red card at Fulham, the combative midfielder was once again involved in a major talking point vs Newcastle. Ths time, however, he found himself on the opposite side of the fence.

The art of tackling is dying within the English game. Once upon a time you would have received a pay rise for winning the ball with a robust challenge. Now you are seemingly punished for it, while at the same time being offered no protection should the roles be reversed.

Friday’s game was the perfect example of this. Jay Spearing had returned from suspension after being shown a red card at Fulham. The pint sized 23-year-old was punished despite replays showing that there was little intent other than for the midfielder to win the ball. Fast forward to the game against Newcastle and we are forced to witness a potentially career ending challenge go unpunished.

But should Yohan Cabaye face some sort of retrospective action for his challenge on Spearing?

Alan Pardew certainly didn’t think so after he was quoted as saying ”there was no malice in the tackle” and that he “doesn’t think the FA will look at it”.

But what do we think? If we are clamping down on hard hitting – yet fair – challenges, then surely action must be taking against those we clearly escaped punishment for what should have been a straight red?

Reckless challenge, should be a couple of games ban.

In an ideal world yes, but this is the fa we are talking about

Its the double standards of refereeing that really, really annoy.

Jay Spearing – red card for innocuous challenge
Johann Cabaye – nothing for horror challenge
Conor Sammon – red card against the scum for a bit of pushing against Carrick
Wayne Rooney (a few months ago) – nothing for a full elbow to the face on another player.

Absolutely craven attempt at tackling. It should be looked at (which should take literal seconds because it was caught from multiple angles) and he should receive a ban.

Nope, he lands on Spearings boot, well the sole of his boots, And both players have both feet off the ground, only one has studs up! 1:16

Personally, I dont think he went to stamp on Spearing, just Spearings leg ended up where his foot was going. Dont think there was any intent, so no I dont think he should be banned. And yes Im a Liverpool fan.

Dreadful tackle. The non malicious argument is nonsense; he clearly raises his foot to stamp, not control before impact. Still, it’d be a dangerous precedent to set, one that I’m uncomfortable with. Surely the point is that we’d rather let a couple of these bad tackles slide and not have Spearing and others sent off for dangerous tackles, than accept the Spearing ban and get loads more players sent off for similarly fine challenges. I’m not saying the Cabaye challenge was fair – it definitely wasn’t – but let’s not get into playing it on other people’s terms and sending off as many other players as possible.

Sorry, meant to put ‘Spearing and others sent off for robust challenges’.

if cabaye gets a ban so should spearing as it was a 50 50 ball if cabaye got there first it could of been much worse

and at that pace he didn’t have enough time to withdraw as from his view he was getting the ball he wasn’t expecting spearing to come sliding in recklessly

Of course not. Only deranged Liverpool fans would think this and even bother sticking up for a stunted, deformed Gnome who looks like he only discovered fire last week.

i like tough challanges in football and normally i’d say no to a ban….but with the some of the decisions against us latley, i would say yes to a ban for the sake of consistency….but id be very skeptical if the fa would even consider it, afterall it is against a lfc player!!

if i were spearing,i would have surely kicked that cabaye’s dick.rascal guy cabaye

3 match retrospective ban. Pardew sent his players out to physically intimidate us, there were a few elbows in the match too which is disgraceful from the geordies. Is pardew still a wee bit bitter from losing the 2006 fa cup final?!!

Also, i would send Graeme Souness round cabaye’s house to show him what being ‘hard’ is really all about as opposed to cowardly.

If the ref had seen it there is no question it would have been a straight red. Jay won the ball with enough time to spare for Cabaye to stop himself and in the slow mo you can see Cabaye goes in foot raised instead of down (which was for self protection as foot down would of meant tripping over Jay’s leg instead of standing on it). But that HAS to be defined as dangerous play. However retrospective action would be a new thing for FA and seriously doubt they will start now!

denzil, like i said , eff off back to your own petty board, or are you yet another intrigued by the appeal of LFC ? cabayes tackle was as bad as spearings, , simple, a bit like yorself

The FA have confirmed that no action will be taken against Cabaye and Coloccini because Lee Probert saw both clashes.

I simply needed to appreciate you all over again. I am not sure the things I could possibly have gone through in the absence of the entire thoughts shown by you on that industry. It was actually an absolute horrifying dilemma in my view, but understanding a new specialised way you managed it made me to weep over gladness. Now i’m happier for your work and in addition hope that you know what a great job that you are getting into instructing most people via a web site. Most likely you’ve never got to know all of us.
