Transfer Deadline Day: Discussion Thread.

Posted on 31. Aug, 2010 by in Debate

Today at 6PM the transfer window will officially shut. Many will be glad that so much speculation will finally be put to bed, while others will look back regretting what could have been. As Liverpool fans though, what is in store for us?

There is still a lot of unfinished business to attend to for many clubs, but with a new left-back - Paul Konchesky – set to sign, there is only one issue burning in the mind of Roy Hodgson and the fans. A striker!

Who will it be? Thus far, we have been linked with an array of talent in the past weeks. However, with today being the day that all deals must be concluded, who will Roy bring in? Carlton Cole looks increasingly likely although reports in Germany suggest that Mario Gomez will be sent on loan. Have we given up hope of signing Fernando Llorente and what on earth is happening with the Ola Toivonen deal.

Outside of the club Tottenham are looking to sign Fabiano while it is unclear whether Manchester City have stopped buying. Arsenal remain hopeful of obtaining a new goalkeeper and the future of many players will be decided.

It’s all systems go and today will undoubtedly be interesting. Let’s just hope it isn’t an anti climax like  last year.

I’m willing to risk it. I will be glued to the laptop and TV. It has to be done.

Unlike many I believe Liverpool are in the market for two strikers one on a full time contract & one in on loan. Also I think if Hodgson’s buisness so far is anything to go by he has already got a deal in the bag & is waiting on either the player coming to the club after weekend games or personal terms to be agreed. The Gomez story has gained pace over the last couple of days so that one could be the one he has been trying to get on loan. Saying that Ola Toivonen was omitted from the PSV side on Saturday, this is no chance happening as he is there no1 striker & isn’t injured so maybe he is destined to join from Holland.

Rumour has it that Insua will make a move to Galatasaray today paving the way for Arda Turan in the opposite direction. As for Okay Toivonen, he was ill, thus his exclusion from the team.

I would be more than happy with Gomez, I can’t see C Cole making much of an impact for us. I would also love a winger to come in.

Reports indicate that a deal for Mario Gomez fell through last night.

Sounds like Gomez is really pushing for this move to happen, I think this could very well be forced through!!!!!

Fell through – gutted. I’m all for getting English talent but I’d rather we went for D Bent than C Cole – at least he is prolific

I suppose Cole is not ideal but getting rid of Babel and a couple of mill is a deal which will strengthen the side.
I think Roy firstly should have made a bid to buy Gomez in installments as the boss at Bayern is adamant he will not be loaning players.

Mario Gomez would be a great signing. He’s a strong forward who wouldn’t be strong armed off the ball by premier league defenders. Carlton Cole could prove a decent signing, we never know how he will do when being fed by people like Jova, Cole, Gerrard and Mereiles, because he’s not a bad finisher, he’s strong and he already plays in the Prem…….. obviously we should as a club be aiming for a better quality of player but with no Champs League RH hasn’t really got the easiest of jobs to convince players! Sunderland look like they have made a great signing in Asamoah Gyan. At least we know if we get C Cole he’s no Triple H (Voronin)

Roy Hodgson has told Ryan Babel that he will be used as a striker this season. However, reports are suggesting that the Dutchman is being lined up by Tottenham

it would be a waste of a real talent if Ryan Babel goes elsewhere, he has all he needs to be a real class act but he’s never going to get the confidence if he doesn’t play

I believe that Bent could be a really great signing. Mario Gomez would also be a great signing considering he is big and strong, he is committed to go to Liverpool and is hungry for game time since he didn’t play much in Bayern.Cole on the other hand wouldn’t be so good since we all think that since he is in the premier league he knows how to play here but he is too inconsistent and what we need is someone who not only we can rely on performing but Torres can rely on. We want Torres to stay and if he gets GOOD help upfront, im sure he will stay. Babel i want to satay cause what liverpool needs is a nice and strong bench.

btw, Benitez is such a fool, tied his first game yesterday and lost to athketico madrid earlier.

I kind of felt like Gomez was too high an aim for us at the moment, but I would love for that deal to be done.

I don’t think a move for Ola was ever in the cards. Roy said he isn’t the right player. But he is a wily one so who knows.

I do not believe Insua will go to Gala anyway, so what’s the point of that Turin rumor? Argentinians are always mucking things up.

I would prefer Zamora of all the players rumored aside from Gomez, but I don’t think Fulham will let him go.

Spurs and West Ham both in for Ryan Babel at the min according to skysports.com

20m euro deal for saurez would be a nice surprise on deadline day – maybe Marco Borriello from Milan, surely he surplus there now? can’t see Babel going unless Pav is used in the deal or maybe bentley – unless there has been dialogue between clubs previously I can’t see it, maybe they will send back Keane?

Bloody hell – Babel is in a chooper flying to WHL in 9m deal – I hope to God we have replacements lined up!

  15. Dominic Campbell

    31. Aug, 2010

It has been reported that Ryan Babel will go to Spurs with Pavluychecno heading in the opposite direction. However, Kopsource understands that Ryan Babel will be staying put.

Developments elsewhere suggest that Stoke will take Lucas on a season loan.

  16. Dominic Campbell

    31. Aug, 2010

According to Sky Sports, Ryan Babel will be heading to West Ham and NOT Spurs

  17. Macca

    31. Aug, 2010

Russia manager was moaning that Pav isn’t playing enough at Spurs, LFC would offer him more pitch time. Would be a better signing than C Cole – or maybe C Cole will realise his true potential at LFC and be a massive success? I doubt it though!

  18. Dominic Campbell

    31. Aug, 2010

Liverpool’s club doctor is in London ready to give C Cole a medical.

Ryan Babel could be offered to West Ham on loan to ease the blow of losing Cole

  19. Dominic Campbell

    31. Aug, 2010

Liverpool have had a bid of £9M for Cole turned down because the London outfit wouldn’t have enough time to find a replacement.

Elsewhere, despite Tottenham bidding £10M for Babel, the Dutchman is staying put.

Just heard that RH is trying to sign OLA from PSV, deal is kuyt plus cash.

    hope this is true.

  22. liampw26

    31. Aug, 2010

why would we want rid of Kuyt??? especially for a player who is not proven in the Prem? at least Kuyt is up to Prem speed

  23. topscout

    31. Aug, 2010

The team needs a Quality striker, to play alongside torres or to rotate with torres.
To be proven in the EPL, you need to be playing in it.

Kuyt is utter dog poo, i cud speak about him all day, put why shud i waste my time. with kuyt, Lucas in the team, its like starting with 9 players because these players offer nothing to the team or the players around them. Kuyts 1st touch, is worse than a elephants one. and don’t get me started on Lucas.

for LFC to be succesfull, players like Lucas, Kuyt, need to be sold, i wud put them on ebay, just to sell them.

Load of of crap!, If Torres gets injured we are fucked, same old story…………………….yank bastards!!!!!

  25. Tgan

    31. Aug, 2010

Thats 4 windows on the spin that Liverpool are in profit on sales, this is a joke, we are being raped by yanks!!!!!

  26. topscout

    31. Aug, 2010

Fxxk me, is RH rafa in disguise…… another missed chance to sign a striker and LFC/RH fxxk this up again.

the team needed a quality striker because its only a matter of time before torres gets injured, breaks down because he will be raped by RH, because he will play him in every game, up front, until he gets injured.

so RH has taken a massive gamble by not signing a striker and he thinks torres, ngog, jovanic, babel will keep LFC in the top 4, until Jan 2011.

RH is having a fxxking laugh. RH has got the rafa virus… i will not sign another striker, come rain or high water. torres will play in all the games, stay injure free and score 50 goals. and did RH see that PIG fly over his fxxking head.

not sure why anyone blames roy for the lack of a striker when it looks like Purslow is pulling his strings! The weird thing is that during this window N’gog picked up a strain in training with France and still we didn’t get any other cover, all i can think is that Roy must think a combination of choices with Dirk, Ryan, Jova can step in we needed!

Also i understand it is now 45 mill surplas or money off the interest !

Kuyt is probably one of the best players in liverpools history. He nevrs tops working hard for team. He has run the most in the premier league last year and year before. If you dont call that good work then im not sure what the hell you are.

I literally just laughed out loud at work when I read the above comment. I could run and work just as hard as Kuyt does. That doesn’t mean I should be starting at one of the best clubs in the world.
