The First Interview: Jordan Henderson

Liverpool’s latest signing Jordan Henderson has sat down for an interview with the club’s official website following a reported £16m move from Sunderland earlier today.

The Reds are pleased to have got their man after weeks of negotiation, but no one is more delighted about the move than the man himself. The full interview can be found below.

Can you put into words how you are feeling right now?

Not really! I’m over the moon, overjoyed to be here and I’m really looking forward to it.

What was your initial reaction when you heard of Liverpool’s interest?

I was flattered to know Liverpool were interested in me and, once I knew, it was a massive decision for me to make but also a massive opportunity.

How difficult was it for you to leave your local club?

Obviously it’s hard to leave your local club. I’m a Sunderland lad, I’ve supported them all my life. But I’m really looking forward to the future now and obviously this is a massive opportunity for me. I’m really excited by it.

Did you seek advice from anyone about the decision?

Yes, obviously my family are all Sunderland fans as well, and it’s pretty tough because I’ve had some great years there. I’ve been there since I was seven and I’ll definitely miss it but, like I say, I’m looking forward to playing for Liverpool now.

There is a lot of competition for places here – is that something you’re ready for?

Definitely. Coming to a massive club like Liverpool, there is always going to be competition. Hopefully I can keep working hard, keep improving, and get my chance on the pitch.

One player you’ll be playing alongside is Steven Gerrard – how exciting is that for you and how big a role model has he been over the years?

He is one of the best players in the world, you want to be playing with him and training with him to try and improve yourself as a player. I’ve trained with him once (for England) and he was unbelievable, to be honest. I’m looking forward to it, and there are other good players here who can help me as well. Steven has been a massive, massive player for Liverpool for years now and he still is. Hopefully I can learn a lot from him.

And how does the thought of playing at Anfield every week sound?

I cannot wait to play at Anfield in front of the Liverpool fans and everything. I’m just excited and I want to get going.

What about Kenny Dalglish – are you looking forward to working with him over the next few years?

Yes, of course. He’s done brilliantly since he came back to the club. He’s done such a good job in such a short space of time. Hopefully he’ll carry on doing that. I’ve already spoken to him and he’s been brilliant with me so far. I’m really looking forward to it.

What kind of things were said between you?

I basically just thanked him for bringing me here. He seemed just as pleased as I was and that’s obviously a good thing! It was all positive.

It’s the start of an exciting new era at the club. What do you believe you can achieve here?

There is a lot to achieve. It’s a massive club and we’ve seen over the last few months how good they are. So I’m just coming here to learn and try to improve my game and I’m sure that along the way there will be a lot of happy memories.

It must be in your mind that you could win trophies here?

Yes, of course. You come to a big club and you want to win things. Liverpool have won a lot in the past and hopefully there is a lot more to come in the future.

Lots of other clubs were reportedly interested in you – do you believe Liverpool is the best place for your development and for you to realise your football dreams?

Yes, definitely. Liverpool’s definitely the place to help me come on as a player, and improve me. The club’s going in the right direction and it can go as high as it wants.

You’re the first major summer signing at Anfield – what’s your message to the fans?

I’d like to tell them that I’m over the moon to be here and they will see me giving everything I’ve got in every game I play. Hopefully they’ll enjoy watching me as much as I’ll enjoy playing for this club.

  1. JC23 says:

We didn’t pay £16m, stop trying to play down the fact that we’ve paid three times the going rate for an unproven player. It’s £20m in all (£16.5m + £3.5m), assuming N’Gog doesn’t go.

    Staggeringly stupid.

  2. Bob says:

@JC23 Stop being so bloody negative. What’s the problem, so what if the club paid 16 or 20 million we have got a very good player with plenty of potential.

  3. Jordan Cartwright says:

Staggeringly stupid?? Pardon? This lad has got so much potential its coming out of his ears, he is going to learn from Steven Gerrard who is one of the best in the world on his day, he is only going to get better. I’m looking forward to travelling round the country watching this lad grow over the next few years!

  4. Leo says:

16 Mill or 160 Mill, I don’t care! Kenny knows what he is doing. Stop whining about transfer fees, your not paying it.

  5. simonmk28 says:

    JC23 is a blatantly a manc loving t**t!

Think JH will do really well, hes young, gifted and if he does become world class he will be worth a fortune in a few years

  6. Yugaank says:

May We Sign A Good Attacking Left Back Too.. Very Important..!!

    • KP says:

just saw henderson play in u21′s v spain….im tellin ya he so shite it’s unbeliievable! i cant believe we’ve wasted so much money on him….i didn’t c anything in his game that made me sit up & say wow….the england defenders gave more decisive passes & contribited more than henderson…im a liver fan through & thorugh but this is a joke. Be aware that comoli has made very big mistakes in the past hence lost his job from arsenal, spurs etc…

  8. stevie c says:

Yeah totaly agree hes gt bags of potential can pick a pace has pace skill and can score goals lets get behind him this lads gna b so important to us over la coming seasons kenny knows what hes doing the fee is actualy cheap at 16 mil and ther is plenty to spend for kk cant understand som so called fans they just moan constant about signings get behind the team u twats ynwa

  9. imPerfecTionist says:

last year people were complaining that we spent no money and now they complain that we spend too much….. wtf do you really want?
hederson is a real bright prospect and we should be happy that our club is showing financial its prowess.

  10. imissxabi says:

He seems to love the word massive! But in all honesty, he seems like a genuine, hard-working young man who is happy to be a Red. And that’s all that matters to me. Welcome to the club Jordan Henderson!

  11. ryan1996 says:

thought of a song for this guy…. although he has to earn it!!

henderson son son, he fuckin shits on anderson, henderson son son, came to us with ambition, down the right or down the left he pings the ball on carroll’s head, he is ace and quality and he’s liverpools prodigyyy!!!!

    what do you guys thinkk???

    • Word says:

Take out fucking, change shits to shites. Starting from “came to us with ambition…..” is brilliant. I hope he earns it when he plants a seed in the back of Man U’s nets!

  12. MerckZ says:

Poor sod, having to wear Damien Comolli’s sweaty track pants. Welcome Jordan – I’m sure he’ll be a permanent fixture. You just get the feeling with certain players, got good vibes with him.

  13. Sparko82 says:

Don’t read the negative! If we spent 3mill on Henderson these pessimistic fans would complain that we had no money, fsg were mingbags and we can’t get top four paying 3mill for players. So shut the fcuk up stupid fans.

Some fans make me fume, moan when we don’t spend and moan when we spend.

  14. breeny0911 says:

from the liverpool website we are going after proven british or international talent within the prem….but will still take a look at over seas if they fit what liverpool are looking for this window ……..straight from the main man him self

  15. Dave McQueen says:

I don’t care if FSG spend 1 million or 100 million on him. As long as they bring quality to our club and don’t burden us with debt I’m pleased. Anderson, Ramires etc all cost similar amounts – it’s the going rate for a young prmising midfielder.

He seems to have his head screwed on – I’ve heard he’s a really nice lad which is great. Let’s get behind him . Go on JH!

  16. Jesus says:

According to Damien Comolli the amount that we spent on him hasn’t been reported yet.

  17. l.f.c 4 life says:

delighted with him coming 2 l.f.c he’s only going 2 improve, learning from the master stevie g

  20. Name (required) says:

King has done great thing. We, even, expect more than this from him. The squad should be full enough to win trophy next season. Everybody! Please stop snagging at the King!

  21. Andrew Mwangwegho says:

I beleive Jordan will not make us down, he is still young and flexible hope is a good replacement of Xabi and with the combination of Gelard and Meires things will work for us. welcome boy!!

  22. Mwasiya says:

Thats wat we nid such good lads wo are willing to learn i guess Jordan will do us justice way to go to the King..We nid more lads..YNWA

  27. Mark Wilders says:

We paid 20 million for Aqualini, so I dont know how this could ever be looked at as a aste of money. Great young talent. Everyone scoofed at big deals for such players Ashley young when he left Watford, but now look at him. Have some faith and its not as though its 20 million for some lazy untalented player. This guy will work his socks off.
