The Alberto Aquilani Debate
Posted on 21. Aug, 2010 by Lee McAndrews in Debate
Juventus are reported to be stepping up their interest in loaning Liverpool’s No.4.
Roy Hodgson looks ready to send Alberto out on loan to the Italian side hence his exclusion from the Thursday night squad. After the game, Roy admitted that in order for the Italian to play regular football, he may have to loan him:
“It would certainly be what he needs, it would certainly protect the value of the player and when he does return to Liverpool no doubt we will see the Aquilani that we signed before he came here injured last year.”
Now I rate Alberto as a player and from what I have read he seems a decent man; always making the right noises about wanting to stay and fight for his place.
If he is to be loaned out, would that leave sufficient cover? Yes we have bought Poulsen and it looks like Monster Masch may be with us until at least January, but is the cover good enough for a 60 game season?
Gerrard, Lucas, Masherano, and Poulsen will provide experience while young players such as Spearing and Shelvey would provide back up.
Is there really not a place for Alberto to regain his fitness and eventually win his starting berth? Surely he could have played on Thursday to add some more guile to the middle of the park? For all of Lucas’s talents, isn’t Aquilani a better footballer?
There are unfortunate situations surrounding Alberto’s move to Liverpool. When he arrived he was injured and on top of that he was bought to replace our player of the season; Xabi Alonso. So undoubtedly the weight of expectation was unbearable for both player and fans alike.
I still believe that he has big role to play for us this season. Should Mascherano be sold, Alberto would be my choice to play beside Gerrard in the middle of the park – he is blessed with all the necessary tools to light up Anfield, should he be given the chance.
Alberto to Juventus – looks like this one could happen. It could be very risky with Mascherano’s future uncertain. We definitely could not afford to lose both players, which would indicate if one stays the other will go.
What do you make of the whole Aquilani embargo? Is he worth the paper he was signed on, or was this a poor signing that just happened to be a parting gift from Rafa Benitez.
You decide.

Alberto should be kept, the way i see it is that we have 3 holding midfielders: Mascherano, Lucas and Poulsen, and 2 creative midfielders: Gerrard and Aquilani. If Gerrard is injured then we’ll have to play 2 holding midfielders which will just dejavu from last season. But Poulsen’s inclusion effectively meant Mashcerano or Aquilani would be gone and it doesnt look like Masch is going.

This is the first time i have disagreed with Roy Hodgson, If the lad is fit he is a fantastic player. He barely started last season but scored 2 and made 6 goals, I hope he has second thoughts about this. Also he cost Liverpool only £5m down with the rest over a 5 year contract, if targets were met, which they clearly have not been. A total of £17m and not £20m as the press keep saying would have been paid, that is a long way off!!!!!!

i really like the look of Aqua too and agree he should be given a chance. Maybe a starting role in the cup games if fitness really is an issue. He looks to have a good touch and understanding of the game but is not yet geared up to Premiership pace, strength etc…Would be a shame to see him go as I feel Roy could well get the very best out of him and certainly if Masch goes there will be a gaping hole in the middle and on the bench. Liverpool have lacked strength in depth for a long time now so unless there’s something going on that we don’t know about it would seem unwise to lose him.

Aqua is better than lucas. He always on the bench so we cannot say that he is just a waste of 20m.The way he played againts atletico madrid and all the assist show he really can play. For me he is better than joe cole in term of supporting lone striker.

I don’t get it. I really don’t get why managers just won’t give the man a chance. From the glimpses that I’ve seen, he seems to be a very smart player, holds the ball well and create wonderful chances for his teammates.
I agree with Tgan. I disagree with Hodgson’s decision. With Joe Cole’s suspension, I would have thought that somehow, Aqua would have a chance to prove himself in Cole’s absence. Well, seems unlikely now.
Two managers, both not having faith in him; the guy must surely be devastated.

You just have to wonder how the man is in practice, because on the pitch he shows his quality more than not. It’s a travesty that a player of Alberto’s abilities is not getting regular football at Liverpool. There were times last season when you could see how tired Lucas was–he played every match. And there were times last season when you could see how badly we needed the creativity of Aquilani.
This is stupid. Unless Hodgson is bringing in another good player and this is part of the deal, this is stupid stupid stupid. It’s an outrage to be honest. I’m disgusted with how the player is being treated here.

Liverpool are broke the squad is light on talent and experience why the hell is Roy loaning him?
If he does not like him sell so the club loses a few mill they could buy another in a position the club needs to fill.
I am seriously starting to doubt Roy already and this rubbish about loaning him to up his value is madness.
We do not know what the new owner will do but come January they will need to spend big because the backup is not there.

Lpool lack creativity in the centre of the park. This is the first decision made by Hodgson that I have disagreed with. I don’t even see Roy bringing in a replacement. He should have been kept.

I don’t get this one, I really don’t. It seems neither Mascherano nor Kuyt are sure to stay for the year–yet here is Hodgson loaning out Aquilani who is, arguably, the best player in the squad after Torres and Gerrard. I think it’s a poor decision by Hodgson, a complacent and lazy decision that will probably come back to haunt him.

RH has let Aquilani go out on loan because…….
he knows he is not fit,
he’s not in his plans,
he wants to bring in his own players.
I wud of kept Aquilani, sold Lucas and kuyt.

Not many Italians have done well in EPL and base on the few games played, Aquilani though playing well in flashes, tries too much with fancy wayward passes and doesn’t seem to gel well with the other players. True he should be given at least till January to prove his worth if he is fit but I believe RH is slashing salary budget so to bring in other players. Oh well. YNWA. Go Liverpool.

This is a different sort of opinion that many people don’t usually talk about. Sometimes I fav stuff like this on Redit. This article probably won’t do well with that crowd. I will be sure to submit something else though.

I’m curious if you ever have problems with what people post? Honestly the internet used to be like a different place, recently though it has turned around. What are your thoughts?
