Luuk De Jong on Verge of £12.5m Liverpool Switch
Posted on 04. Jan, 2012 by Tom Cullimore in Rumours
Luuk de Jong has been touted with a move to Liverpool following the player’s claim that he would like to play in the English top flight. The FC Twente striker has netted an impressive 13 times in the Eredivisie so far this season and is said to have attracted interested from a host of major clubs, including Tottenham, Newcastle and the Reds.
The 21 year old has seen his stock rise considerably during the past months, and with only two years left on his contract is seen as a potential solution to Liverpool’s well documented striking problems.
He told the official FIFA website: “First I want to emphasise that I’m happy at Twente,”
“But every footballer has dreams, me included. One is to play in a major international competition and the Premier League would also be a great challenge.
“You do not know what will happen.”
The young Dutchman also spoke of his desire to play for his country in the European Championships this summer, with many backing him to fulfil these ambitions. With up-and-coming talent of paramount importance in Liverpool’s transfer policy, it is hardly surprising that names such as de Jong’s are associated with the club.

As with previously mooted moves for players such as Lukas Podolski, de Jong’s Euro 2012 aspirations are likely to rule out a January switch to Anfield that has the potential to disrupt his progress on the international front.
Though he has spoken directly about his favourable views on the Premiership (and not, it is worth noting, necessarily about Liverpool) it is impossible to gage how desperate he is to play in it, if at all, from what is said. Language barrier aside, phrases such as ‘every footballer has dreams, me included’ are used far too frequently to warrant quite the level of speculation that this interview has raised.
The Dutch League itself is a curious one; plenty of players have come from it to be successes (Luis Suarez amongst them), whilst others find the transition far more challenging. At such a young age it is possible that Dalglish and Comolli would rather observe de Jong’s development at a distance for a few years than make an immediate decision.
As it stands, de Jong almost certainly represents too great a gamble for the Reds to make a move; at the present time they require a Dennis Bergkamp, not a Ryan Babel, and until it is known which of the two the young Dutchman is more likely to mature into, Liverpool are likely to spend their dollars elsewhere.

One thing I forgot to put, the guy advocates Steve McClaren as some kind of genius – I’m really not sure that hits the minimum level of intellect you’d want at the club…

Firstly, the article needs a youtube highlights reel to showcase the talent – otherwise how can we verify if he’s the NEXT BIG THING!?

Looks promising, although for the first 50 seconds of that clip I thought he already WAS playing for us given the chances he spoons.
Secondly, I don’t see the European championships being a factor, the dutch have this other striker called Van Persie…my guess is he’ll be the main hitman for the dutch at the championships.
Lastly, he’s already got a built in song to the tune of…
De Jong Ones!

50% potential? He has a strike rate that RVP did before he came to England, and he is already figuring in the Dutch national side… A bit harsh mate!

Really wouldn’t be too surprised if this happened and not being funny you can’t get on the pitch for the Dutch as a striker unless you’ve got some quality but saying that if we are looking to spend that kind of money on a young dutch striker I’d prefer Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, brilliant in two leagues instead of just one so bit less of a gamble De Jong has 26 goals in 75 Eredivisie games Van Wolfswinkel had 30 in 93 so not much difference there but Ricky has 7 in 12 in Portugal so has proven he can adapt to new surroundings. Plus, how cool is that name?!?!
