Liverpool Targetting Jose Enrique
Posted on 14. Feb, 2011 by Liam Tomkins in Rumours
Liverpool are preparing a summer approach for Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique, according to the Daily Mirror. The Spaniard has been a stand-out performer for the Toon since joining in 2007, and could link up with former team mate Andy Carroll following the local lad’s £35m January move.
Enrique was regarded as something of a coup when he arrived in the North-East during Sam Allardyce’s reign, and he has since gone on to be linked with a host of top flight clubs. Liverpool are said to be leading the chase, though, as they look to fill a problem position currently occupied by England right-back Glen Johnson.
Damien Comolli ran the rule over the player last weekend and is thought to be keen on bringing him to Anfield, although Newcastle are likely to slap a price tag of £10m or upwards on his head now that Liverpool have a bit of financial muscle.

The Daily Mirror is the lesser of many evils when it comes to transfer speculation – they’ve got a half decent reputation for their inside stories where Liverpool are concerned. However, by the time the summer comes around it is unlikely that there will be a left-back in the land that the red tops haven’t linked us with and for that reason we don’t find this story particularly telling.
We like Enrique, and certainly wouldn’t complain if he came on board in the summer. Having said that, we believe (or hope) that Fabio Coentrao will be our top target for that position come May. If we cannot lure him in, though, Enrique would be a suitable contingency plan.

Enrique is a good player, but if he’s top of our summer shopping list I’ll eat my shorts.
That said, I’m totally confused about who Kenny and Damien are looking to bring in. As I see it the priorities, in order, are:
Priority #1: Winger (£25 million)
Priority #2: Left Back (£15 million)
Priority #3: Second Winger (£15 million)
Priority #4: Striker (£15 million)
Priority #5: Defensive Midfielder (£10 million)
#1: Eden Hazard
#2: Fabio Coentrao, Sylvain Marveaux, Taye Taiwo or Jose Enrique
#3: Gervinho, Arda Turan, Ashley Young or Eljero Elia
#4: Karim Benzema or Ezequiel Lavezzi
#5: Charlie Adam
Anyone else see things differently?
I also think if we bring 5 in we’ll need to get 5 out:
#1: Aquilani
#2: Cole
#3: Jovanovic
#4: Ngog
#5: Poulson

If that is what you are expecting I’m afraid you’ll be sorely disappointed. We will not sign 2 big-money wingers AND another striker. We will most likely spend big for one of Hazard/Young/Lavezzi to play alongside Suarez and Carroll, then sign some depth to back them up. I am hoping that we then go for a LB and Charlie Adam, but who knows at that point.

Wouldn’t mind him at all, good thing to work on summer moves already now.

@Upper Krust
I think you have it pretty good there but it needs to be tweaked slightly.
#1 priority is LEFT Winger.
we can play maxi, kuyt, Johnson, etc. on the right and I personally think we should be playing Johnson there once we get a legit left back. Currently we really only have Jovanovic and Aurelio who can play LW, with Maxi playing out of position there. None of those are truly class and Aurelio is getting up in age.
Eden Hazard is a RIGHT winger and would cost a hell of a lot of money. Either him or Ashley Young are great on the right, but moving Johnson over there would solve a lot of our problems (if we shored up LB) and wouldn’t cost us a penny. Thus, spending money on a winger should go to a legit lefty and not overload our right side.
#2 priority is def left back. Like I just said, a solid LB makes johnson free on the right and keeps him in a more natural position.
#3 priority is not getting Charlie Adam UNLESS we get rid of a lot of players. First, Adam is not a defensive midfielder, but rather a CM like Alonso. Currently, we have Joe Cole, Gerrard, Meireles, Shelvey, Poulsen, Lucas, Spearing, and potentially Aquilani to play in the middle.
Where would Adam play? he is not a DM so he won’t compete with Lucas, and he isn’t better than Gerrard or Meireles. With our systems, he would just sit on the bench like Joe cole and rarely get a game in. Plus, it would just hurt the development of Shelvey once he is back healthy. The only reason to get Charlie Adam would be to replace Gerrard, but he isn’t going to retire for another 3-5 years so what is the point of buying a guy to sit on the bench?
It is a waste of money and addresses none of our needs!

@Jake – thats not who I think we’ll sign, just what I think the likely priorities are. Personally I think we will sign:
Hazard (£22-25 M), Marveaux (free) and Gervinho (£15-18 M)
@drew – Most wingers can play either side nowadays and I have seen many clips of Hazard playing on the left.
I agree with you that I fail to see where Charlie Adam fits in.
Next season I am hoping to see us line up like this:
————–Suarez – Carroll
Gervinho – Meireles – Gerrard – Hazard
Marveaux – Agger – Carragher – Johnson
———————Reina
———-Pacheco – Kuyt
Suso – Shelvey – Lucas – Cole/Maxi
Aurelio – Wilson – Skrtel/Soto – Kelly
—————–Jones
With Aquilani, Jovanovic, Poulson and either Cole or Maxi and either Skrtel or Soto leaving.
