Liverpool Set to Offer £10 million for Defoe
Posted on 16. Jan, 2012 by Elliott Binks in Rumours
Liverpool are believed to be lining up an offer in the region of £10 million for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe, according to the Daily Mirror.
Defoe has ultimately found himself out of favour at White Hart Lane this season following the influential loan signing of Emmanuel Adebayor and, with Spurs boss Harry Redknapp also believed to be interested in signing Loic Remy from Marseille, the England striker will be even further down the pecking order at the club.
The signing of Defoe would definitely add much needed fire-power to Liverpool’s attack. Another goalless encounter at Anfield against Stoke on Saturday exemplified the lack of attacking flair available for the Reds at the moment; with Suarez suspended and Bellamy unable to play 90 minutes week in, week out, Kenny Dalglish has been left with a weak attacking line.

A move for Defoe would be beneficial to everyone: Tottenham’s Harry Redknapp needs the money to bring in a new striker to assist their title challenge, Defoe needs first-team action in order to keep his name in line for a place at Euro 2012 this month and Liverpool are undoubtedly in need of a proven goalscorer to bolster their Champions League qualification hopes.
The fact that a large number of media outlets have ran with this story today indicates there must be some truth in it. After all, there’s no smoke without fire. And, if the £10 million fee which is being touted is true, then we believe that it would be a decent piece of business to bring the 29 year-old to the club for such a fee.

should have tried to bring defoe in 4-5 years ago, highly underrated IMO, ok he misses the odd sitter now and again but who doesnt, i’d be more than happy to sign him, tho i’ve just read on twitter “club sources” have said liverpool absolutely will not sign defoe….

he’s a good player and he would give liverpool that much needed speed. a bit on older side but we need him to perform now, not 5 years from now like fsg’s policy. 10m is pretty steep but all the bright young stars might hesitate to come to the club cause we’re lacking champions league. defoe is what we need right now.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Way …….
OK I’ll admit we need a goal scorer BUT HIM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAAAAAAAAAAAAYY
WHY should we buy someone who’s a bench warmer at the moment, injury prone, very selfish (as a player), outside F S G youth policy AND more importantly help his current club fund the possible pursuit of Remy with 10mil if the amount is true when we could use the same money and a touch more to buy Remy ourselves?.
Remember when Bent was at Spurs this guy threw all his toys out the pram (including his platform shoes) because Bent was scoring at will . . . . . and who was sold? Bent, and lets not forget Bent was the leading ENGLISH goal scorer for almost 5 seasons not him.
Once again . . . . NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WAY.

If your skeing me or when people talk of players that are better than what we have – then defoe up top is better carroll. – there no debate about it!.
But is defoe a long term view, maybe – maybe not!
he is not old, but he is not 22- 25 either, but because a player is at around 29 year of age, doesnt mean that players should not be thought of!.
For me we still need better, but is he quick – yes
is he better to run into spaces then carroll – kuyt – yes
does he knwo this league – yes
he knows our other english lads – yes
would he give us 2- 3 years- most probably yes
would he settle in the north – ?
what would his wages be-?
what would the price be 10 mill or up -?
so for me because we need a forntman then the reply would be if the wages are balanced and the player has a strong desire to be here then great, and if and its a big if his body goes through a very strong meidcal – then only then would i be parting with 10 mill for another english player?
same old liverpool leaving it late and when we really need to get on with it we are banging about trying to get a striker in, the whole world and his dog know that liverpool need a frontman !!! thats only going to bump the price up – way to go comolli and fsg – great stratergy that guys !!!!!!!!!!!
why do we do it, leave most of the business when we really have a hug need for it to be done sooner, i think the fsg and the club have been dreadful in this market and for me we should have acted the minute suarez was banned, we also knew that lucus was out and yet here we are with just over 1 week to go and yet we are in every newspaper – why because they all know we need players – hence why we can be linked to everything that plays the game…
dreadful stratergy and very poor management from lfc again in yet another dogshite market, – thanks lfc, no thank you -for all your faith that your repaying to all the fans that put their hard earned money into the club – DISGUSTING ….

We need selfish but proven players. Not one in Liverpool’s starting 11 is a proven goalscorer, except Stevie G, who even is now taking up the slightly defensive role.
We know he can shoot and score, thats the main issue we need to solve. With Suarez on the field, no one would take on a shot. They’d be more likely to pass it to Suarez. But with Defoe, we’ve got another shooter.
And, Bent lacks speed and mobility.

I’m with Norlam66. The dude is well past his prime. If we sign him it puts a lie to the FSG policy of going for youth, a lie which was exposed when they agreed to Downing and Adam, both of whom are already playing at their none too glorious prime. I agree, why not go for Remy ourselves. But then Kenny does have an unhealthy fixation with British players.

liverbird – are you joking are what?
im not a fan of many english over hyped players but darren bent while not being as quick as- walcott, lennon, etc is not slow, your comments about bent above just dont make any true reading?
bent is not even close to be slow or one paced? while i dont really want defore of bent, bent in any way does not lack speed and or mobility at all…………………..
what a very odd post that is??????????

If the choice is between Carroll and Defoe, then it has to be Defoe every day of the week.
But that said, Defoe is not a player I would sign to be our main Striker. If anything I see him as our second striker, in other words a replacement for Kuyt. But will Defoe want to move from Spurs bench to our bench, thats the question…?

but honestly sam, wont giovanni dos santos do for the wide man we want? this guy plays for spur and the got lennon and bale and her is young so he doesn’t get into their squad but i think he fits ours and he’s cheap, knows the English game and wants out of spurs.

I agree that a fee in excess of ten million should be spent on a player as an investment, but Defoe does have two things going for him: he desperately wants first team action and he knows how to play with a big man. Defoe formed a good partnership with Crouch, maybe Dalglish is hoping that he can do the same with Carroll.

No disrespect KC_Accidental but i don’t care if Defoe desperately wanted to get rid of all his cash i still don’t want him in a LFC shirt.

Defoe, if he can be signed for under 7m, then i say do the deal.
If he is signed for 10m+, KD/comolli need to leave the club.
i think Carroll, defoe will be a good partnership.
If no striker can be brought on loan or signed for 7/8m this month, then save the dosh and put that money towards signing a quality players in the summer.
if defoe signs for LFC for 10m, then watch harry get a quality striker on loan or sign for big money ie torres, drogba etc etc.
