Downing Wants Wembley Role

Downing Wants Wembley Role

Posted on 20. Feb, 2012 by in News

Stewart Downing hopes his exemplary display of attacking endeavour in Liverpool’s 6-1 FA Cup demolition of Brighton will put him into the running for a starting berth in next week’s Carling Cup final.

The former Villa winger was at the source of a lot of dangerous deliveries on Sunday, notching one assist and being credited with many more crosses that might well have been finished on another day.

Downing was delighted to have played a part in such a convincing win, and  hopes his contributions do not go unnoticed ahead of the upcoming clash with Cardiff.

“It was a great game to play in, especially the second half, and it was nice to get a few goals in front of the Kop,” he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

“The first half was a little bit tricky when they got the equaliser and made it hard for us, but the manager told us at half-time to keep doing what we were doing and the goals would come.

“I thought our second-half performance was really good.

“I really enjoyed it out there. Me and Jose could see we were getting a fair bit of space and the manager told us to try and exploit that space, and I thought on both sides we did well. That’s where most of the goals came from.

“Competition for places is tough here. I’m sure it’s great for the manager and it gives him a headache. We have got options all over the park, everyone wants to play in the starting XI, and it’s good for the club.”

On his run and pull back for Andy Carroll, Downing added: “It was a good team move. I got a bit lucky when I managed to get away but it was a good finish from Andy.”

Attention now turns to Wembley on the 26th February, and Downing is not expecting Championship outfit Cardiff to go down without a fight.

He added: “We’ve got a good week to prepare for the Carling Cup final now. We will prepare well and do everything right.

“Cardiff won’t be an easy game, finals never are, and we will prepare right and make sure we do the business on the day.”

Come on Neil, he was our outlet on the wing the whole game. He did have a really fantastic 15 minutes, but a also a good game. You are just repeating the criticisms leveled at him from earlier in the season, when he showed the exact opposite in this game.

I will be interested to see the line-up Kenny picks for the Cup, I think he will take Bellamy over Downing, but Downing-Gerrard-Suarez-Carroll looks to be a potent combination. I would take Henderson and
Gerrard in the center, without a doubt.

lets face it folks the standard of opposition wasnt the best, stoke will provide us with a sterner test, would be nice to win clinically against cardiff, its high time our purchases starting paying off their huge fees.a victory in carlingcup will gel a bit of loyalty in this team, might give kenny better idea of his starting eleven most of the time.

Downing had a really good game and he may have even had a goal if Stevie hadn’t screwed up a final pass to him. If he played like this every week I wouldn’t have a problem with him. Hope he does as well next week in the final.

I haven’t got a problem with him but we paid 20 mil for some one as they say to have chalk on their boots and go past players like bale Lennon Valencia downing doesn’t do it enough he always wants to come in side all the time and the move breaks down how many times do u see Bellamy go past players

He has had the most crosses in the league this season that no ones scored from. Not his fault the strikers are not finishing the chances

I think downing plays better down the right he can cut inside a defender very good and playing him down the right also would be a big advantage to glen johnson I think with those 2 down the right would be unreal play bellamy down the left.

I think that may be a fascinating element, it made me assume a bit. Thank you for sparking my thinking cap. Every so often I get so much in a rut that I just feel like a record.

Giggs is not a habitual crosser like Downing but on most occasions his crosses got to get converted into goals. So were Nani’s crosses for that matter. Still, Gerrard is the best crosser in the entire league.
