Debate: The Transfer Window
Posted on 15. Jun, 2011 by Liam Tomkins in Debate
The transfer window, by definition, is a certain period of time in which a football club can transfer and register players from other clubs to their own. But football fans know it is really much, much more than that.
When the window swings open silly season ensues – players and agents angle for moves, rumours fly thick and fast and managers are forced to identify and pursue their targets at a time that suits FIFA, rather than themselves. Smaller clubs have to batten down the hatches as the giants of the game try to bulldoze their way in with hoards of cash. This, in turn, causes unrest and disillusion amongst players which can have a hugely detrimental effect on the squad as a whole, especially if someone’s head is turned midway through the season.
This ‘by the book’ system was made compulsory in 2002/03, but there have since been calls to scrap it in favour of the old way whereby clubs were free to register players throughout the season until the closing weeks. One of the most high profile figures to speak out against the system was Steve Coppell, who believes the transfer window encourages “scurrilous” transfer activity adding that “I cannot see the logic in a transfer window. It brings on a fire-sale mentality, causes unrest via the media and means clubs buy too many players”.
But what do you think? Does the system work, or was the old way better? Or do we need an entirely new protocol to keep up with the ever changing face of football? Have your say below…

There are pros and cons.
Scrapping the window would give teams in financial trouble the chance to cash in on their best assets and save their future / going into administration.
However if opened big clubs could turn players heads easier and force deals through without the threat of a deadline looming. This cld also knock prices down. It wld also benefit the richer clubs who cld just replace injured and suspended players through going and replacing them at ease.

Clearly the old way was better, it was a 2 way street, if u had injuries, or if systems weren’t working you could easily bring someone in to freshen things up, if a player wasn’t pulling his weight or getting a game u could ship them out or send them on loan whereby you wouldn’t have X amount of talent not playing and taking up valuable wages.
Stupid transfer fees would be less frequent, you wouldn’t have deadline day situations whereby a player clearly wants to leave but the club can’t find a replacement, how players have missed out on moves because of this and then miss out in the next window as clubs take up other options. I dont see, and never have seen a valid reason why the transfer was imposed, they were warned at the time it would increase fees, and now they are bringing new financial rules to try to stop the over inflated fees and wages, scrap the window and the fees will drop

I hope Liverpool can go for the best players from around the world rather than just concentrating on British players.

the window is the only way small clubs ( no disrespect) can hold big clubs to ransom over transfers so they wont vote it out . I believe the old system worked the best because the players had to play well all season in the hope a big club would step in and buy them were as in the system now we have the likes of torres who only played when we played chelsea to insite his move so some players are using this system to their advantage over their clubs

Without the Transfer Window we lose the magic that is transfer deadline day – something that I am a massive fan of. Would be a sad moment to see it all year around; the excitement would be gone.

I have to admit I enjoy the banter, excitement, gossip and speculation of the transfer window.

Well, The Transfer Market Stops Players From being Distracted Mid-season, Nuff Said, without the transfer window, man city will just put in 250m bids for everyone and turn there heads, then pull out, lol, im not saying there wouldnt be pro’s but theres more cons,
